Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865); Our beloved 16th President, fabled deliverer of the Gettysburg Address, … devout vampire hunter?
The big-screen adaptation of the much talked about Seth Grahame-Smith mashup novel is slated for a June 2012 release. The 70-million dollar project, to be delivered in 2d and 3d, is being produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (directing as well, see photo below of Bekmambetov (right). Benjamin Walker (bottom-photo left) portrays the gangly slave-emancipating president, having beat out Adrien Brody, Josh Lucas, James D’Arcy, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen for the role.
The story is based on new historical information, via the ex-presidents “newly discovered” diary, which reveals that Lincoln’s mother was killed by a supernatural creature. This historically overlooked incident understandably fuels Abe’s passion to slay vampires as well as their slave-owning associates.
Grahame-Smith tried to stay true to the historical and personal elements of the real Abraham Lincoln in his writings. He also, thankfully, took vampires off the cover of teen magazines, and put them back where they belong (on the working-end of Abe’s axe).
