The West Memphis 3: Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley Jr. (Pictured Above), were released from prison in August 2011 due to lack of evidence after spending 18 years in prison. Their case spawned community and celebrity support, several documentaries, and now a feature-length narrative.
The project, “Devil’s Knot”, is scheduled to go into production this June. It’s based on the 2002 best-seller of the same name by investigative journalist Mara Leveritt. The book follows the savage murders of three 8-year-old boys and the conviction of the three teenagers accused of killing them as part of a brutal satanic ritual.
Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon are attached to star, with Atom Egoyan set to direct. The recently-freed defendants Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin are executive producing with Worldview Entertainment’s Molly Conners, Sarah Johnson Redlich, Maria Cestone and Hoyt David Morgan. Elizabeth Fowler, Clark Peterson, Richard Saperstein and Worldview CEO Christopher Woodrow will produce.
“Worldview is excited to involved with such an important and relevant project,” said Worldview’s Woodrow. “We believe this story needs to be told onscreen, and we couldn’t ask for a higher caliber of talent to do so.” The Weinstein Co. is shopping the project to foreign buyers at the Marche du Film this week in Cannes. CAA will be handling the domestic rights.
