Director Baz Luhrmann, Leonardo DiCaprio and British co-star Carey Mulligan will walk the red carpet as their new film “The Great Gatsby” opens the annual film festival in Cannes, France.  The lavash $105 million adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel has already opened in America with decent early earnings and fairly favorable reviews.

Festival organizers and fans are hoping Luhrmann can top his 2001 opening, considered the last truly extravagant Cannes launch, which featured a red carpet flanked with can-can girls to promote his movie “Moulin Rouge”.

Michael Douglas, Ryan Gosling, Matt Damon, and Alain Delon are among the other stars expected in the French resort town for the much heralded festival which ends on May 26th.
