A number of prominent directors sniffed around the big-screen adaptation of “Man From U.N.C.L.E.”, and numerous leads have been discussed, including Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, and Bradley Cooper. The green light only came after Guy Ritchie’s pitch won over the Warner Bros. powers-that-be.
“There were several screenplays along the way, but it never got to the starting line before Guy…” according to Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros.. “It needed a direction, it needed someone who had a point of view and a real voice. It’s very particularly Guy Ritchie’s ‘Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ ”
Richie’s eighth feature film, via a $75 million production budget, features Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo, Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin and Alicia Vikander as the mysterious female add-on to their mission. With a sizable advertising budget to boot, Warner Bros. risks a lot on a project with no proven big-budget names cast.
“U.N.C.L.E.” is set to debut in theatres on August 14. Hopefully Warner Bros. recoups, my $12 donation is already earmarked…
