Rum Diary is now in theatres. The Johnny Depp-produced adaptation of Hunter S Thompson’s semi-autobiographical novel is carefully hewn, thats obvious to see, but is it a classic or more of a vanity project?
J. Depp, as the drink-loving reporter Paul Kemp, hustles off to Puerto Rico to take on the greedy mega-corporations that have been feeding on the region. 300 bottles of beer on the wall later Kemp finds himself struggling with the fact that he has been suckered into aiding one of the paradise-spoiling resorts he had set out to abolish.
This well crafted film may suffer a tiny bit in the initial box office as it fails to dumb itself down for the masses, but in the end it looks to have the fabric of which classics are made.
